Fools Gold – Flying Lessons (Rating 4 out of 5)

foolsgoldThis one just might be one of the best summer records of the year and It’s not even Memorial Day yet. Fools Gold, a World-Pop collective of musicians hit the mainstream highway hard with this one leaving their foreign language, more eclectic sound behind them in favor of a more mainstream vibe that rides the rainbow between 80’s British Synth-Rock, Sly and the Family Stone older school Funk, and 60’s sunshine Psych Pop with equal aplomb.

The opener “I’m In Love” is a clear star on this record that sounds a bit like what Joy Division would have sounded like if they were a bit more fun, and “Wildflower” adds a tropical dusting to a Roy Orbison type vocal with Beach Boys Harmonies is a song that could have been written for Harry Belafonte in the 60’s, or Ryan Adams yesterday.

The infectious, polished groove of “Another Sun” will bring an 80’s smile to your face that falls somewhere between The Police and Boy George.

If you are looking to get your groove back and ready to prime the pump in preparation for the summer ahead, Flying Lessons is a great place to start.
