Liars make pitch-black art-rock that morphs and shifts from album to album, but always retains a core of bitter, urgent darkness. Even 2007's somewhat conventional indie-rock self-titled album and 2012's pretty, Kid A-biting WIXIW feel like examinations of the grimy corners of the soul.

Five Cool Ones: Five Cool Cover Songs

Posted by falconi5 on March 8, 2015

5

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires

Jason Isbell certainly is not resting on his musical laurels following his Southeastern his critically praised last album.  Here he is with his wife Amanda Shires with a cover of Warren Zevon’s Mutineer.  Stay tuned. This is one very cool collaboration.

Brandi Carlile – Sixty Years On

This rarely covered song goes all the way back to Elton John’s second album. This version is from the superb Brandi Carlile album Live at Benaroya Hall and features the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. This song hasn’t sounded this good since Elton opened with it on Live in Australia going all the way back to 1987.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah

Even without the poignant early death father/son back-story this is one heck of an emotional rendition of the Leonard Cohen classic.

Lissie – Stairway to Heaven

Of the many cover versions of this song that are out there including most notably Nancy Wilson and heart’s scorching this one from the official cover song muse of The Falcon’s Nest is the absolute best.

Guns N’ Roses – Knocking on Heaven’s Door

This one is another song that has been covered by just about everybody. Warren Zevon’s epic sign-off version is probably the best one, with this Axl Rose belted version right behind. This particular rendition from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert is particularly epic.
