When an otherwise iconic Rock Star inserts themselves in the dynamics of a band where they may not be the alpha dog, the results can be hit or miss, usually veering quite heavily to the miss side of the street. There have been times where these star-studded collabos have actually yielded some ear pleasing results. Here are five that we like.
Maybe not a Supergroup in the strictest sense of the word since Tommy Shaw from Styx and Jack Blades from Night Ranger were pretty darn good but not necessarily super, we did get a chance Rock out with Ted Nugent and some pretty Cool Guitar Rock from back in the day when he was known more for his music than his political agenda.
Any band that features a member of Montrose, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Van Halen along with a what is he doing here entry from Joe Satriani has got to be on fire, and this band consisting of Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Chad Smith, and Joe Satriani sets the roof ablaze. Let’s just hope that Sammy stops hanging out in Cabo and starts making music again.
The Traveling Wilburys
The traveling Wilburys were less of a supergroup and more like a bunch of friends getting together to create some good music. The talents of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison alone couched have meshed into a clash of egos disjointed monster, but with the production values courtesy of ELO’s Jeff Lynne the resulting two records were million selling masterpieces. We’re just not sure what happened to The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 2 album.
Jack White seems to get bored pretty easily, but that is all right since the results are usually pretty spectacular, and his Raconteurs collaboration with Brendon Benson and a couple of members of The Greenhornes is one really cool case in point.
The Divine Fits
Spooon has been around going on twenty-some years now and has consistently put out quality stuff album after album, and in 2012 lead singer Britt Daniel put together a side band called The Dine Fits with members of Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, and New Bomb Turks. This super group for the new millennium is must hear stuff.
