    • She & Him ‘Volume 3′ – NEW MUSIC REVIEW May 24, 2013
Song Of The Day by Eric Berman – “Turn To White” by She & Him Music critics crack me up. They’re always looking for something to dis about a record in order to validate their jobs as critics. And, I suppose at times I am no different than the rest. Nothing is ever just great, some fault must be found in order to have something to say. I guess without cri […]

    • Watch: Bon Homme (feat. Lydmor) - "The Optimist" (Acoustic Version) May 23, 2013
Bon Homme is the electronic powered alter-ego of Tomas Høffding, a Danish musician who also plays in the band WhoMadeWho. His recently released April EP Nighttripper is a lush, plush bit of twinkling electro-pop but it wasn't until we got our eyes and ears on the "acoustic" (ie., minus the heavy club beats) version of the EP's best track […]
    • DC Weekly New Release Recap May 23, 2013
In case you missed it, this is pretty much a Daft Punk week -- a time when hipsters around the world adjust their horn rims, stroke the chin scruff and meditate on what it would be like to get up and move their booties and throw their arms in the air like they just don't, like, care. But may we bend your ear with a few more worthy albums out this week? […]

    • Listen: Jenny O. - "Opposite Island" May 22, 2013
The exquisite "Opposite Island" is one of those songs that keeps beckoning back for another listen just to prove, again and again, that, yes indeed, it's as great as we think it is. Written and performed by pixie-ish L.A. songstress Jenny O., the track is part bedroom piano/pop simple (for anyone with a piano in their bedroom) and part stunnin […]
    • Frally - Apis Mellifera May 22, 2013
A mix of both confessional reflection and spiritual observation -- all rendered with one of the most achingly lovely voices --  Frally Hynes' exquisite 2010 album The Light prevailed as one of our favorite albums of the year, one that we described as an "inspired masterwork of sensitive, sensual songcraft." Long-awaited new album, Apis Mellife […]
    • RADAR: Ef May 22, 2013
Maybe it's the chilly Scandinavian climate and legendary cool  demeanor but Sweden's Ef sure know how to warm things up without getting too, well, sentimental in their quest for arty chamber/pop and post/rock grandeur. Everything sounds as big and crisply detailed as the starry winter night sky, a curiously compelling musical mix that echoes Sigur […]
    • Eisley - Currents May 21, 2013
Self-produced fourth full-length from Tyler, Texas' all-in-the-family band Eisley finds the four siblings (and a cousin) further refining and expanding their sound. A mix of off-kilter but melodic pop choruses and a dollop of arty indie rock, Currents (May 28, Equal Vision) is both smart, adventurous and, says the band's Sheree Dupree-Bemis, " […]

Duo's debut plays to their strengths...“How do you stay motivated in the midst of everything that’s going on?” the sampled intro into ‘Settle’ asks. “As much as you like to be in your comfort zone, the reality is that everything changes,” the disembodied voice yells.  Which might lead you to believe that we’re about to hear Disclosure dabbling in pirate […]
    • First Thoughts: Boards Of Canada: Tomorrow's Harvest May 24, 2013
Their much anticipated return previewed...It begins with a short fanfare, a synthesised note-burst surely half-inched from some forgotten '70s educational program. It’s sweet, it’s fun and it’s completely in tune with where Boards Of Canada have come from – sounding not unlike computer start up code, this is a mechanised wink, a programmed nudge, a pun […]

As it turns 10, Clash reassesses Radiohead's sixth...Stop someone in a Radiohead t-shirt on the street, ask them what their favourite record by the Oxford five-piece is, and it’s unlikely, indeed, that the answer would be ‘Hail To The Thief’. Yet the highly influential, still-evolving band’s sixth studio set, while not as revered as 1995’s ‘The Bends’, […]

Best Albums of 2012: Brandi Carlile ‘Bear Creek’

Posted by falconi5 on July 12, 2012

album review from allmusic

Named in honor of the converted turn-of-the-century Washington barn where it was recorded, Brandi Carlile‘s fourth studio outing, the rough and tumble, sweet and soulful Bear Creek, is as fiery as it is bucolic. Carlile‘s wonderfully expressive voice is as tailor-made for country as it is for roots rock, and the 13 cuts on Bear Creek lean heavily on the former, striking a nice balance between the nuanced twang of Alison Krauss and the bluesy cockiness of Bonnie Raitt, especially on the spirited, boot-stomping opener “Hard Way Home,” the sweet and steady “Keep Your Heart Young,” and the gospel-kissed howler “Raise Hell.” The notion of diminishing youth (Carlile turned 30 during the making of the album) plays a pivotal role on Bear Creek, and contributes to some of its finest moments. Both “A Promise to Keep,” with its soft cadence, deft fingerpicking, and stoic refrain of “The hill I’m walking up is getting good and steep,” and the lush and languid closer “Just Kids” manage to bask in the sepia glow of nostalgia without disappearing into the past, which is an attribute that Carlile, with her old-school melodic sense and genuine flair for Roy Orbison/Patsy Cline melodrama, displayed with 2007′s blistering future American Idol standard “The Story.” Four albums in, Carlile has honed her distinctly retro brand of Northwest Americana down to science, and Bear Creek feels both easy and immediate, which is usually what happens when talented artists finally figure out who they are, and that heartache, failure, defiance, and confidence can all go to the dance together.
